The Cost Account is accountable for the ongoing analysis of process improvement projects, margin analysis and tracing costs back to underlying activities. The Cost Accountant must also construct and monitor those cost-effective data accumulation systems needed to provide an appropriate level of costing information to management.
Position Responsibilities
- Construct data accumulation systems for a cost accounting system.
- Create and review the controls needed for data accumulation and reporting systems.
- Coordinate physical inventory counts and cycle counts.
- Investigate cycle counting variances and resolve issues.
- Update standard costs in the bill of materials.
- Review standard and actual costs for inaccuracies.
- Validate the cost of goods sold as part of the month-end close.
- Accumulate and apply overhead costs as required by generally accepted accounting principles.
- Work with ownership to locate and dispose of obsolete inventory.
- Report on margins by product and job.
- Report of periodic variances and their causes.
- Ensure that underlying cost data regarding product profitability is accurate.
- Ensure that the quote model generates cost estimates and pricing that meets or exceeds company profitability targets.
- Review sales quotes for accuracy and reasonableness and report improvement opportunities.
- Monitor material cost changes and work with purchasing and sales to mitigate impact on product profitability.
- Ensure the accuracy of underlying product data through random audits of cost data.
- Provide accurate reports and analysis to all departments as directed.
- Assist with month-end close process as needed.
- Understand Lean Manufacturing and support its implementation.

Position Requirements

- Expertise in ERP systems and Excel spreadsheets.
- Background and experience in all facets of bookkeeping.
- Knowledge of basic legal requirements that are applicable to the financial end of the business.
- Ability to read, and interpret, documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Ability to prepare financial statements.
- Must have a good mathematical aptitude.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
- Knowledge in Microsoft Word and general internet software.
- Must be able to use common office equipment such as a fax machine, copier, multi-line phone system, computer equipment and peripherals.
- Fluency in the English language (read, write and speak) as the overwhelming majority of clients, suppliers and subordinates communicate primarily in that language.
- Qualifications
- BA/BS Degree in Accounting or Business Administration.
- S/he should be willing to attend additional training to upgrade his/her education and/or sharpen any skill deficiencies.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience accounting/finance experience in a manufacturing environment.
